Health & Safety

All persons handling Silco International colloidal silica should be familiar with all information on MSDS.

Health Hazards
Contact with the colloidal silica may cause transient irritation to the skin and eyes. Dusts from spills or deposits may be considered amorphous silica , although due to agglomeration the particles are normally larger than respirable size. However, when aerosols are produced, such as in spray applications, respirable droplets or dusts may cause irritation of the respiratory system with a cough.

OSHA : Amorphous Silica
PEL: 6 mg/m3 (total dust) 8 hour TWA

ACGIH: Amorphous Silica
TLV: 10mg/m3 (total dust) 8 hour TWA

Safety Precautions
Avoid contact with skin or eyes. Avoid circumstances that cause a mist or spray of the liquid or a dust of dried particles. Application methods using rollers or sponges are preferred rather than sprays that generate fine droplets. Wearing safety goggles and rubber or plastic coated gloves is recommended. When handling be sure to wash thoroughly when completed.

First Aid

In case of skin or eye contact, flush with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes. Call a physician. If large amounts are inhaled, remove to fresh air. If not breathing, give artificial respiration. If breathing is difficult, give oxygen. Call a hysician.

Handling

  • Silco colloidal silica should not be allowed to freeze as this cause the silica to be irreversibly coagulated.
  • Silica should be stored at or near room temperature, avoid freezing as well as long periods of high temperatures.
  • Spills should be flushed with plenty of water, watch for slippery conditions in the spill area.
  • Refer any questions to storage and equipment to the appropriate sales or technical support at Silco International.
